We’ve all read the startling statistics about the negative health effects, chiefly obesity and type II diabetes, of a sedentary lifestyle, especially for kids. We’re also hearing from the American Academy of Pediatrics and other experts that television, mobile devices, and computer “screen time” should be limited for babies and toddlers. “Reducing technology use is one step in the fight against obesity and diabetes,” says Len Saunders, the author of Keeping Kids Fit: A Family Plan for Raising Healthy, Active Children.

But once you’ve turned off the TV and powered down the iPhone, you may be thinking, “Now what?” It’s time to engage your children in active play habits on a course that will lead to a lifetime of healthy choices.

Even infants are ready to learn that “play time is active time,” says Saunders, who is also a childhood obesity spokesman for the American Heart Association. So use the tips below to protect your child from becoming an obesity statistic—or permanently attached to a talking, colorful screen—by teaching them fun, safe ways to engage in active play.
