What All Moms Need
As women, we’re all familiar with the gender gap when it comes to salaries. But there’s another very important area where women are coming up short: life insurance coverage. A whole lot of us (myself included) have no life insurance, or have much less than our partners. And that could mean big problems for our families should something happen to us.
Wait, you’re thinking, I’m a stay-at-home mom with no income or I work part time. Why do I need life insurance, especially since my spouse is covered? You might believe because your partner has life insurance, that you’re set. (At least that’s how I’ve been operating anyway.) But you know what, that’s where we’re wrong. Both parents need to be covered in order to help financially protect your family.
As a culture, we’ve forever undervalued the costs of managing a home, of childcare, of keeping families organized and running smoothly. These tasks that women take care of, both full-time moms and those employed outside the home, have serious value for families. For example, try to replace a stay-at-home mom with full-time childcare: depending on your location, that could cost the average American family in the neighborhood of $900 a month.
Childcare is an obvious cost, and one many families are already paying. But moms do so much more high-value (if unpaid) work in their homes. Salary.com has even calculated the amount a stay-at-home mom would make if it were a paid position, and it’s more than $100,000 annually. Mama, in an alternate universe you would be a seriously high earner! And if you weren’t around, well, it would cost your family a bundle to pay others for all that you do.
Still think you don’t need life insurance? Consider that most experts recommend coverage that’s at least equal to 5 times your annual income. And when you remember that a stay-at-home mom is handling $100,000 worth of work (though sometimes it feels like way more), the need for life insurance becomes very apparent.
So I’ve been checking out life insurance options. I look to get things like this done as quickly and easily as possible, but I also don’t like to sacrifice cost or quality for convenience.
Enter Haven Life. They’re a relatively new (they’ve been around almost two years) life insurance agency that offers term life coverage entirely online – see what I mean about convenience?
Haven Life was started by a dad who was trying to get life insurance for his family and quickly became frustrated by how long the existing process took. So, naturally he founded his own agency, which is now backed by MassMutual – an insurer with over 160-years experience.
What makes Haven Life so great is that they’ve streamlined the purchasing process into something you can confidently complete online in a matter of minutes (as opposed to weeks). I love that there aren’t any documents to fax or phone calls to make, just an easy online application and help from Haven Life’s Customer Support Team if and when I need it. Trust me, no one will call you unless you ask them to! Best of all, their term life coverage is way more affordable than you probably realize. For example, based on the information I provided on their site, I was given a quote for a 20 year, $500,000 policy for less than $20 a month. That’s a pretty good price for peace of mind, right? I suggest taking a few seconds (literally) to get a free quote of your own as well.
As moms we take care of our babies from birth — really from pregnancy! — and we don’t ever stop. Life insurance is one more way mamas can keep their family’s futures protected, even if they’re not the ones around to do the daily tasks and nurturing. Believe me, like all parents, I don’t want to consider a future where I am not in my kids’ life. But it’s also our job as moms to make sure we have security nets in place for our kids just in case the unthinkable should happen. We make sure our care is always there, even if we aren’t.
