And the First Baby of the New Year Is Named…

Each year, Guam welcomes America’s first baby of the New Year, and this year was no exception.  The U.S. territory which is in Chammorro Standard Time, celebrates the New Year 15 hours before the East Coast of the United States.

The first baby born on U.S. soil this year is named Kanato Azure Ikezumi and was born just 7 seconds after midnight.  Kanato’s parents are Japanese nationals who are residents of Guam. We doubt baby Kanato will start any new name trends, but stay tuned, as we are compiling our annual list of First Baby Names of 2013.  And while we’re doing that take a peek back at our list from last year, The First Baby Names of 2012 and see if you can spot any trends.

Bruce Willis Picks an Old Fashioned Baby Name

No joke, it’s another girl for Bruce Willis.  The action hero and his wife Emma Hemmings-Willis welcomed their first child together, a baby girl named Mabel Ray Willis, on April Fool’s Day.

Baby Mabel joins half-sisters Rumer, Scout and Tallulah, Willis’s daughters from his marriage to Demi Moore.

The name Mabel feels like a good fit with her sisters’ quirky, old fashioned names, though RumerScout and Tallulah are decidedly more out-there.

Mabel  was uber-popular in the 19th and early 20th Centuries. It’s been 50 years since the name has been on the popularity charts, but it’s enjoying a quiet resurgence ever since Mad About You characters Paul and Jamie famously named their daughter Mabel, citing the acronym “Mothers Always Bring Extra Love” as inspiration. We wouldn’t be surprised to see the name break back into the top 100 baby names this decade. Celebs have been jumping on the Mabel bandwagon. Chad Lowe named his daughter Mabel in 2009.

Mabel shares the popular -el ending with hit names Isabel and Ariel. And it’s popularity trajectory reminds us of once-dated-now-trendy up-and-comer Hazel.

As for the middle name Ray, dare we suggest that it is joining the ranks of celebrity go-to middle names, right up there with Grace, Rose and Ann? Dermot Mulroney’s daughter, born in 2009, shares both a first and middle name with Mabel Ray Willis.

Do you like old fashioned names like Mabel and Hazel? And what do you think of Ray as an up-and-coming middle name for girls?
