Do You Love Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Baby Name?

Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard attend the Warner Independent Pictures Premiere of "Criminal"

Maggie Gyllenhaal and husband Peter Sarsgaard welcomed their second child on April 19, a daughter named Gloria Ray.

We were a little surprised by the name Gloria for a hip Hollywood baby of 2012. After all, it’s done nothing but fall in usage since its peak in the 1940s. And while it does have multicultural appeal, Gloria might sound like a “mom name” to you (as in your mom) because it was so popular into the ’50s. Sitcom fans may associate the name with Sofia Vergara’s character on Modern Family, and perhaps Gloria Bunker (Archie and Edith’s daughter from All in the Family).

Since Gloria has yet to get much traction on the trendiness scale, we wonder if the newborn was named after someone. Maggie, the star of the upcoming Hysteria, has never been shy about her feminist views, often using her fame as a platform to talk about women’s issues. So we’re guessing she’d be happy to have a daughter who shares a name with Gloria Steinem, one of the most famous and influential feministsof modern times. It would make perfect sense, especially if Maggie and Peter’s older daughter, Ramona, was named after literary icon Ramona Quimby, the protragonist of Beverly Clearly’s tween series about the kid who’s always wondering why she’s not allowed to do the same things as the boys.

What do you think of the name Gloria? Do you think of Gloria Pritchett, Bunker, Steinem, or maybe Estefan?
