Family Portrait…With the Fetus?

Maternity Photoshoot

I’m a fan of maternity photo shoots in general—if I didn’t have pictures of my pregnant self, I might forget how much my body changed during the process—and yet I always wonder why some couples feel the need to be so creative that they completely creep the rest of us out. Here’s an example:

This photo, posted on Awkward Family Photos, has been shared more than 60,000 times on Facebook, and although the comments range from supportive to disgusted, most of them lean toward wishing the proud parents-to-be had at least made a few different choices. Like…maybe the mom could have worn pants? Maybe the dad could have found a shirt? Maybe the sketch of the fetus directly on the belly could have been skipped entirely? Maybe they should have just pasted this picture into a personal photo album instead of posting it online for the entire world to see?

In the spirit of “to each her own,” I’ll concede that this sort of thing is fine and good if it’s what floats your boat. What I won’t do, though, is say that sharing it on the internet was anything other than a really bad idea.

What do you think? Does this earn a Facebook thumbs-up for you, or are you looking for the Dislike button?
