Is TV Part of Your Child’s Bedtime Routine?

Little Girl Watching TV

Bath, book, and bed…for a lot of us that’s what the night time routine looks like. But, for others like myself, you can throw some TV into the mix. Yes, I admit it; I let my kids watch TV before bed. Come on, I know a lot of you out there do too, go ahead and admit it. But, what exactly are you letting them watch?

If SpongeBob Square Pants or  Scooby Doo is part of the routine, a new study says you may want to make them a “don’t.” Apparently those shows are “too much” and “too overwhelming” for pre-schoolers and can really affect how they sleep. The study suggests you take a trip down Sesame Street or go explore with Dora instead. Both of those shows are big hits in my house, so I guess I don’t completely fail when it comes to the old bedtime routine!

Still, my unscientific opinion is this, “Everything in moderation.” I’m not saying I would let my kids watch an episode of Cops before catching some z’s. But, I don’t see what harm a little TV can do, even if it is SpongeBob or Scooby Doo.It seems like these studies are always finding a problem with one show or another at one time or another.

Do you let your kids watch TV before bed? Are there certain programs you specifically avoid?
