Is Your Cell Phone Damaging Your Baby’s Brain?

You give up alcohol, cigarettes, maybe sushi and lunch meat, and coffee too. But would you give up your cell phone during pregnancy? What if your baby’s health was at stake?

Researchers at the Yale School of Medicine just released a study that shows radiation from cell phones have created ADHD-like symptoms in mice whose mothers were exposed during pregnancy. The affected mice tended to be more hyperactive and have reduced memory capacity compared to mice who were not exposed to radiofrequency radiation as fetuses.

“We have shown that behavioral problems in mice that resemble ADHD are caused by cell phone exposure in the womb,” says Dr. Hugh S. Taylor, a senior author of the study. “The rise in behavioral disorders in human children may be in part due to fetal cellular telephone irradiation exposure.” Taylor says in this article on Science Daily that more research is needed to determine what levels of cell phone radiation are acceptable for pregnant women but that, for now, limiting your exposure is a smart thing to do.  At the very least, he advises pregnant women to carry phones away from their midriffs and not take them to bed at night.

Scary stuff, right? Especially if you use your cell phone all day, every day, whether for work or because you’re addicted to Angry Birds and Draw Something.

Is this study enough to change your phone habits while pregnant?
