Actress candidly shares details of baby weight loss and family trips

If you know Jessica Alba only as the nubile actress from movies like Valentine’s Day and Sin City, then you need to read Net-A-Porter’s cover story on her immediately. Jessica — who turns 32 in two days — comes across as charming, laid-back, and a great mom. I think it’s because many of us watched her grow up on shows like Dark Angel that we don’t give her enough credit that she actually has grown up, into an incredibly self-aware woman and content mother. Sure, she still subscribes to Hollywood culture when her career necessitates it, having recently shot the Sin City sequel and needing to drop a ton of baby weight quick.

You have to appreciate her bluntness in discussing how she slimmed down just months after giving birth to second daughter Haven Garner Warren in 2011. Other celebrity moms might toss off vague answers about “eating right” and “training,” but Jessica went straight to the nitty-gritty. “It was brutal; it’s not for everyone,” she warned before explaining, “I wore a double corset every night for three months. It was sweaty, but worth it.”

When she says “worth it,” you imagine she’s referring to being able to return to acting. After she married Cash Warren in 2004 and they had Honor Marie Warren in 2008, Jessica downsized acting’s priority in her life to focus on her family. But she gushed about filming Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, probably more so than anyone else involved with the movie will: “I just finished the best movie I’ve ever done. It was so opposite to what I do [at home]. My approach to acting now is so differentI’m fearless because I have nothing to lose. Before [children] my identity was wrapped up in every decisionnow, I don’t care. It could be a pile of s–t and you could think it was the worst thing you ever saw, but I still had the best experience.”

It’s this ability to compartmentalize and appreciate the different facets of her life that really impresses me about Jessica. Not to mention how candidly she discussed a recent trip she and Cash took, and how it reinforced her faith in their marriage: “It was our first trip in six years that wasn’t for work. I didn’t realize how important it was until we got home and I was like [excited voice], ‘We like each other; we really are best friends.’ I knew we were rooting for each other every day and we’d made these two people who are my favorite things on the planet, but having that time just us, it was cool to connect. We both chose the right person.”

Aww. Honor and Haven are really lucky.
