Leigh-Allyn Baker Welcomes Baby Baker

Scrambled letters

Disney Channel star Leigh-Allyn Baker welcomed her second son with husband Keith Kauffman recently. Months before her baby’s birth, Leigh-Allyn was already thinking of great names; in June, she shared her naming thoughts with PEOPLE. “I fall for those names that are kind of traditional and have been around forever but are not on the Top 100 list,” she told the magazine. On the happy day, Leigh-Allyn followed her instincts for a well-established yet unusual name by choosing one very close to her own heart. She named the baby boy Baker, her own last name.

Baker follows two rising trends of turning a surname into a first name and choosing an occupation-inspired name. Similar names like Harper have exploded onto the Hollywood scene in the past few years. The advantages of Baker are clear – it’s bold, a good fit with older brother Griffin’s two-syllable name, and meaningful to Leigh-Allyn herself. And it’s definitely not in the Top 100, as Leigh-Allyn wanted. Her boys bear their father’s last name Kauffman, so there’s no danger of this baby carrying around the name Baker Baker. Phew!

James, the baby’s middle name, is a more orthodox choice. It’s been in the Top 20 for more than a century. It also is a family name–James is both Leigh-Allyn’s husband’s middle name and her father-in-law’s first name.

When Leigh-Allyn shared her thoughts on naming with PEOPLE, she also revealed her son’s top choice for the new baby’s name: Myber. “I don’t know where he got it,” she said. “My husband and I will be in the other room discussing names and we’ll hear, ‘I said “Myber!‘” Myber has definitely never appeared in the Top 100–in fact, it doesn’t appear in the Namipedia at all–but we’re glad Leigh-Allyn chose the less-rare rare name of Baker instead.

What do you think of surnames or occupations as names? Would you have preferred the name Myber?
