Moms Mixing Wine with Play Dates

Friends having fun at home with red wine and food

It’s 5 a.m. and you’ve been up for two hours with one teething baby. Your other child has now taken over your bed because he’s had a bad dream, leaving you clinging to the edge like you’re falling off Mount Everest. This is motherhood. It is one tough job. There are times when you need a break. So, what do you do to unwind? Hit the gym? (If you have the time.) Take a nap? (Yeah, right.) Have a drink with another mom and trade war stories?

Hmmm…I don’t know about you, but all three sound like a little slice of heaven. But, it’s number three that has some people fired up because of where some moms are choosing to raise their glasses. See, a lot of moms are mixing their Pinot with their children’s play dates. While little Jenny is having her juice box, mommy is having some juice of her own. These mommas say they just need to unwind. They figure why not do it with other moms while the kids are having fun too.

As much as these Pinot play dates are a growing trend, I just can’t get on board. Don’t get me wrong, I love my glass of wine just as much as the next mom, but I wouldn’t feel comfortable drinking during my kids’ play dates. I think there is definitely a safety issue here no matter how careful you think you are being. What’s so wrong with waiting until the kids are in bed, or at least until you’re home, maybe during dinner?

If you want to kick back with your mommy friends, who not try to make a girls’ night out?  I just think there are so many other options out there that women don’t have to resort to this kind of thing. It’s anything but child’s play.
