Princess Diana’s Brother Names Baby after Her

Princess Diana

Earl Spencer, brother of Princess Diana, honored his late sister when naming his 7th child and 4th daughter. The 9th Earl Spencer, also known as Charles Edward Maurice Spencer, and the Countess Spencer, the former Karen nee Villeneuve Gordon, welcomed baby Charlotte Diana Spencer last week.

Their first child together, baby Charlotte is joining a big family, Earl Spencer has 6 children from his two previous marriages, and Countess Spencer has two daughters with her ex-husband Hollywood producer Mark Gordon.

Here in the US Charlotte is trendy name with a classic sound and has gone from #293 in the 1990s to #45 last year here in the US.  Charlotte is a well-known feminine form of Charles (The Earl’s first name) and especially popular in England (#12), while commemorative middle name Diana is not in the top 100 baby names.

Royal watchers who remember that we wondered about Kate Middleton’s transition from Miss Catherine Middleton to (deep breath) Her Royal Highness Princess William, Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn, Baroness Carrickfergus, will appreciate that young as they are, the Spencer children each hold a title. New baby Charlotte is officially a Lady, just as her elder Spencer sisters are, Ladies Kitty Eleanor, Eliza Victoria, Katya Amelia (who goes by Amelia), and Lara. There are two Spencer boys; brother Edmund is officially The Hon. Edmund Charles Spencer, born 6 October 2003(age 8); while the eldest Spencer son, and heir to the earldom, is Louis Frederick John Spencer, Viscount Althorp.

What do you think about the supersized Spencer sibling name set: Kitty, Eliza, Amelia, Lara, Edmund, Louis and Charlotte?

Is commemorative naming OK with such a famous namesake?
