Top Baby Names of 2011

The start of a new year means a chance to look at the year gone by…in baby names! BabyCenter just released its annual list of most popular names for babies born in 2011—one hundred names of each gender, from Ava to Zachary.

The most common name for girls last year was Sophia (including alternate spellings like Sofia), which was followed by Emma, Isabella, Olivia, and Ava. Topping the boys list was Aiden (for the seventh year in a row!), Jackson, Mason, Liam, and Jacob.

BabyCenter says the data “comes from hundreds of thousands of parents who shared their babies’ names with us in 2011,” so although the list might not accurately reflect true statistics for the entire country, it’s still interesting to see the names and look for trends.

You can read the full lists here and click through on each name for details, like popularity over time, origin and meaning, suggested sibling names and more.

What do you think about the top picks for 2011? Are your favorites on there? Will you use a name from the list—or even let the list help you pick a name for your future child—or will you try to avoid anything on the list in favor of something less trendy and more unique?
