What’s the deal with Alyson Hannigan’s baby name?

Actress Alyson Hannigan arrives at the UK premiere of "American Wedding"

How I Met Your Mother star Alyson Hannigan introduced her new baby with a sweet tweeted photo June 12. The newcomer,  Keeva Jane, joins Hannigan and hubby Alexis Denisof’s 3-year-old Satyana in a very unusual sib set.

Back in January, there were predictions about what the pair would name baby #2. Let’s see how those stacked up.

Hannigan and Denisof said they chose  Satyana because it’s rooted in the Sanskrit word for “truth,” Satya, and has a Russian-sounding “-ana” tagged on the end to go with Denisof’s Russian surname. We thought they might choose a Russian-influenced name for baby #2, such as Sonya or Katya. But no. Keeva may be an Anglicized version of the Gaelic name Caoimhe. (Yes, those two names are indeed pronounced similarly in Gaelic.) If Caoimhe seems unpronounceable, it’s only because you’re not in Ireland, where it’s the 24th most common girls’ name.

The names Keeva and Satyana do have a few things in common. Both are very rare names in the US, both have a feminine -a ending and both share an ethnic je ne sais quoi. Additionally, both Keeva Jane and Satyana Marie pair highly unusual first names with classic middle names – a practice embraced by many parents who want their unusually named children to have something to “fall back on.”

What do you think of the name Keeva Jane? How do you think the name fits with Satyana Marie as a sib set? Have you paired a creative first name with a more traditional middle name?
